We are committed to a philosophy of feminism, anti-racism, anti-poverty and anti-oppression.
Our goal is to end violence against women; through responsive, accessible, services and supports, public education and action and advocacy to address the social, economic and political conditions that create violence in the lives of women and children.
About Her Life Her Words
Interim Place is committed to ending violence against women and their children.
In order to support our programs and services that help close the door on abuse and open the door to hope, we launched our Speaker Series in 2003 as a luncheon event. The "Women of Courage" Luncheon Speaker Series profiled inspirational women speakers and brought them to the Mississauga community.
As the speaker's series evolved, we have renamed the series,"Her Life, Her Words"and continue the tradition of bringing women of national and international repute whose lives and work reflect our beliefs in our mission and vision of our organization - namely a commitment to social justice, feminism, anti-racism, anti-poverty, anti-oppression and a firm commitment to issues that are important to women and their communities. We invite speakers who have wonderful stories to inspire personal growth and who provide inspiration for positive change. Now 20 lunches later, our speaker series has raised much needed funds and brought great women's stories to the community.
In 2008, we launched our new name, logo and website and brought the series back to the Region of Peel. In order to attract larger audiences, the 2009 Speaker Series will be held in the evening as a 3 hour event.
Every year we need to raise approximately CAD$600,000 ,a third of our funds from non-governmental sources to support our current programs and services.
With competition from other not-for-profit organizations in terms of the variety of events organized for fundraising, the Her Life, Her Words Speaker Series has proved to be a successful and unique vehicle. It's unique because there are no other organizations in the Peel region doing a speaker series and in particular profiling women speakers. Our aim is to grow the speaker series into one of Peel region's high caliber, must-see events.
